25. Richard Shaw
Marin ceramic artist Richard Shaw has been working in this mode of realism since 1976. Many of his glazed porcelain pieces are containers, or refer to containers, which is part of a tradition in functional ceramics. He uses the still life to suggest an arrangement of common objects from daily life, which have been left for a moment, frozen in time. Here we see matches and a cigarette stub.
Richard Shaw began teaching at the San Francisco Art Institute in 1966 where he taught for twenty years. He is the recipient of many prestigious awards and is included in public and private collections internationally.
