Bringing together a mix of aesthetic sensibilities, design histories, and personal narratives, Chair Stories, features designs chosen by accomplished architects, artists, designers, and design experts with ties to coastal Marin along with personal narratives describing how the chosen chair has influenced their life, professional thinking, or design practice; in some cases participants also contributed a chair of their own design. Chairs as diverse as a vintage walnut lounge chair by beloved Bolinas woodworker Arthur Carpenter, an armchair made from rope by Marcel Wanders submitted by Dwell magazine founder Lara Deam, and even an antique commode from the collection of Inverness eco architect Sim Van der Ryn, among others, accompany designs by participating industrial designer Yves Behar; interior designer Charles DeLisle; artist Ido Yoshimoto; and architects Valentino Agnoli, Chris Deam, and John Lum. The exhibition also features a selection of wooden maquettes by Art Carpenter and his son, Tripp Carpenter, as well as related ephemera from their Bolinas Espenet Studio.
