StuArt Chapman: Freebox Neckties

September 23 - November 12, 2023

Curated by Louisa Gloger

Stuart Chapman moved to Bolinas in 1976 and branded himself StuArt. For many years, he managed the Freebox in Bolinas, a free resource for clothes. Every Wednesday, StuArt and volunteers would reorganize it. No longer in fashion, neckties were being discarded, but StuArt recognized them as once-valuable cultural talismans. Featured in this exhibition are neckties that he decorated with words and symbols, giving each tie a new meaning. A U.S. Army veteran, StuArt holds a BFA from Cooper Union and an MFA from the Instituto Allende in Mexico. While working as a set designer at KQED-TV in San Francisco, he won an Emmy for Outstanding Set Design (“Ask Dr. Science” with Duck’s Breath Mystery Theater). StuArt exhibits his art locally, is on the Bolinas Community Center board, and has been a long-time editor and contributor for the Bolinas Hearsay News.
