Waz Thomas: Making the Cut III

March 29 - May 17, 2026

Curated by Jessica Shaefer

Making the Cut III presents works on paper created between 2022 and 2026 by Bolinas-based artist and beloved community figure Waz Thomas. The exhibition marks the third public presentation of his “ironic juxtapositions,” or “Wazzys”—playful composites assembled from found imagery drawn from a wide range of printed materials, including scientific texts, travel guides, art books, religious iconography, landscapes, and cultural ephemera. By cutting and recombining these fragments, Thomas creates unexpected visual encounters that reflect his sardonic humor and fascination with the strange and absurd. Working late into the night in his cottage studio, often accompanied by music on a portable radio, Thomas approaches his creative process intuitively and with a willingness to surrender to chance. A prolific maker who can produce several pieces in a single evening, he has built a vast and continually evolving body of work.
