Eirik Johnson: The Mushroom Camps

April 2 - June 12, 2016

Curated by Jennifer Gately

Each year in the forests of Oregon’s Cascade mountains, commercial mushroom hunters erect makeshift seasonal campsites from branches, twine, and plastic tarps to serve as shelter as they forage for precious Matsutake mushrooms. Seattle-based photographer Eirik Johnson’s Mushroom Camps series documents these temporary encampments and follows the journey of the elusive Matsutake from the quiet volcanic forest floors of Oregon to the densely populated commercial markets of Tokyo.
