Kathy Bustamante: Thinking with My Hands

November 16 - December 31, 2024

Curated by Elia Haworth

Kathy Bustamante has nurtured creativity in children and adults through ceramics for thirty-eight years. Yet, she has rarely taken time to exhibit her work, which exudes boundless imagination, and technical skill. Working in her studio, Bustamante savors the process of discovery that unfolds as she turns clay and glazes into something that is surprising and suggests a witty character. She is particularly drawn to making figures using triangles as a motif and creating forms that venture beyond quiet function.

Bustamante moved to Bolinas in 1974 and soon afterward taught ceramics at Full Circle, the former visionary school based in Dogtown. After seven years there, she began her 36 years of teaching ceramics in the outstanding Bolinas-Stinson School Art Shops Program. She encouraged thinking outside the box, and the resulting student creations, like her work, were astonishing and wildly original. Kathy Bustamante also runs the vibrant educational and awareness-nurturing Bolinas Summer Camp she started thirty years ago.
