Master bookbinder and artist book publisher, John DeMerritt, will open your eyes to the wonder of handmade books during this free live virtual event. The presentation begins with an overview of the vibrant and diverse San Francisco book arts scene that Marie Dern was so involved with, including images and examples. Then John will share samples of book structures before leading a live demonstration of several simple structures that you can create at home! This lively event will be interspersed with slides and videos to help bring the art of handmade books to life.

John DeMerritt owns and operates John DeMerritt Bookbinding, in Emeryville, CA where his studio produces books and portfolios for artists, galleries, fine press publishers, and institutions. He worked closely with Marie Dern on many projects. From 2000 to 2013, John taught Book Structure at the San Francisco Art Institute. He has also taught and lectured at The San Francisco Center for the Book, University of California Santa Cruz, The Kala Institute, Columbia College Center for Book and Paper, Visual Studies Workshop, Oregon College or Arts and Craft, The Guild of Bookworkers, and Dartmouth College, among other notable schools, centers, and programs. John and his wife, Nora Pauwels, publish collaborative projects with artists under their imprint DeMerritt | Pauwels Edition.

This virtual event will be presented with Zoom. A link will be emailed to registered attendees prior to the event. Attendees must register before 2:30 PM, Friday, November 13.
