A Timeline of Human interaction with the Bolinas Lagoon

1934-2015

May 23 - June 7, 2026

Curated by Elia Haworth

Bolinas exists because of the Bolinas Lagoon. The residents of the indigenous village of Gualenes, followed by the Spanish recipients of Mexican Land Grants, chose the sunny flatlands near the wildlife-rich lagoon (where the school is today) which anchored this area as the future Bolinas. The California gold rush brought newcomers and more than 80 years of an economy dependent on boat traffic from the wharves of Bolinas to the markets and homes of San Francisco. Using historic photographs from the Bolinas Museum History Archives and brief descriptions, Kate Bimrose, with the help of many, created this timeline to trace human interaction with the lagoon up to the planning for the north end lagoon project that we now have seen come to fruition with the new entrance/exit to Bolinas, and wetlands restoration.
