Bear Flag

The official California state flag owes its design to a flag hastily fabricated to represent the occupation of the town of Sonoma in 1846. Though a brief event, it became known as the Bear Flag Revolt and contributed to the transformation of California from its Spanish colonial ties to joining the union of the United States.
