FOCUS / Hats Off, Americans: Selected Works by Paul Harris
April 8 - June 11, 2017
Curated by Rick Hall
In 2013 Bolinas artist Paul Harris made a sculpture he called “Hats Off, Americans”. This bronze casting provided a useful starting point for this exhibition that includes self- portraits, black and white drawings, and sculpture selected from various phases of his working career. Harris studied at the New School for Social Research, New York City, and with Hans Hofmann in Provincetown, Massachusetts. His work has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, New York; San Francisco Museum of Museum of Modern Art; and Los Angeles County Museum, among others. He was a Fulbright professor in Chile, a MacDowell Colony resident, and Guggenheim recipient. Harris taught art at New York University, University of California, Berkeley, and San Francisco Art Institute prior to becoming a faculty member at California College of Art in 1968, where he remained until 1992. His home and studio are in Bolinas, where he and his wife Marguerite have lived since 1963. Guest curator Rick Hall is a Bolinas artist and taught sculpture and drawing at the College of Marin from 1973 to 2012. |
