Hughen / Starkweather: Where Water Meets Land
September 23 - November 12, 2017
Curated by Jennifer Gately
San Francisco collaborative team Hughen/Starkweather’s Shifting Shorelines project investigates sites where land meets water, and the complex historical, environmental, and political factors that shape them. Through scientifoc data, current and historic maps and photographs, and interviewing local residents including cartographers, fishermen, farmers, poets, marine biologists, educators, environmentalists, historians, geologists and storytellers, they gather diverse information about special locations. Fueled by their research, they then translate the information into abstract drawings and paintings that reinterpret the complex narratives of a landscape, creating new and unexpected forms through which to consider a place, its history, and its possible futures. Hughen/Starkweather’s latest series focuses primarily on coastal Marin and the shorelines of Bolinas Lagoon, Bolinas Bay, Tomales Bay, Drakes Bay and more.
