Midway: Message from the Gyre

Photographs by Chris Jordan

September 27 - December 31, 2014

Curated by Jennifer Gately

Internationally known photographer Chris Jordon’s Midway Island series depicts the harsh realities of the overwhelming abundance of plastic debris filling the world’s ocean. On Midway Atoll, a remote cluster of islands more than 2,000 miles from the nearest continent, evidence of our global consumption surfaces in astonishing places: inside thousands of baby albatross whose remains litter the island. Nesting chicks are fed lethal quantities of plastic by their parents, who mistake the floating trash for food as they forage over the vast polluted Pacific. This exhibition features a selection of these alarming images that call attention to our daily habits and just one of the many serious issues related to single-use plastics and the future health of life on the planet.
