Photographs from the Museum’s Permanent Collection

November 18 - December 31, 2023

Curated by Louisa Gloger and Elia Haworth

This exhibition further celebrates the museum’s 40th Anniversary year and its high-caliber collection development through a selection of photographs by coastal Marin and Bay Area artists held in the museum’s permanent collection. While the museum always presents selections from the fine art collection in the Permanent Collection Gallery, we rarely focus on a particular medium or theme. This selection highlights the rich variety of the artists’ visions, photographic styles, and printing methods—from classic platinum and gelatin silver prints to experimental processes.

In 1998, then Director Dolores Richards, board members, and generous supporters achieved the seemingly impossible: they helped the museum buy its compound of historic buildings. That autumn, Richards opened a room permanently dedicated to exhibiting fine art photography. The board chose to name it The Helene Sturdivant Mayne Photography Gallery, in honor of the photographer wife of Leslie Mayne, whose generous donation helped to purchase the buildings. Since then, the museum has continually presented a diverse array of fine art photography by local and internationally renowned photographers.
