SELF MADE features artists who were somehow influenced by Larry Sultan, his teachings, and his work. Many were friends. Each creates handmade or ephemeral objects as part of their practice that operate on an intimate scale, and the process of making is often evident in the final form. For the receiver or viewer, the experience of the encounter with the piece is intimate and tangible. Some are one-offs and quickly made, and for others greater circulation is possible through their scale and form. Ultimately, these are generative outlets for the artists—creative acts exploring forms that reflect an informality or looseness—and the pleasure and fun in the making.
