Elizabeth (Betts) Holland
Wharf Road
c. 1949
We call the roadway alongside Bolinas Lagoon “Wharf Road” today, but historically locals called it the Embarcadero. This was the area where boats, at one time as many as 15 schooners a day, loaded and unloaded goods, as boats facilitated the local economy between Bolinas and San Francisco for some eighty years.
Betts Holland was a prolific Bolinas artist working in painting and ceramics and teaching art in Bolinas. Her home, a historic ranch, gave its name Horseshoe Hill to the surrounding area and roadway.
