Sun Festival, Bolinas
May 1980
The Sun Festival, was a celebration of music, dance and wild creativity, established by young counter-culture residents of Bolinas in the 1970s. Each May it began with celebrations on the beach, then a parade of sometimes hundreds of people wound their way up to the ponds on Big Mesa for an afternoon of feasting, music and celebrating spring renewal. The Sun Festival is small now, and has evolved into a lovely ritual of blessing community babies.
