Deed from heirs of Grigorio Briones to Samuel P. Weeks
1865
This remarkable deed documents a significant change in local land ownership. The Briones family’s Rancho Las Baulines included the east side of the lagoon to the top of the ridge. This deed documents the transfer of about 300 acres of land on the east side of the lagoon to Samuel P. Weeks who then developed a successful dairy. Today the Weeks-Runckle family property is known as Volunteer Canyon, part the educational nature preserve of Audubon Canyon Ranch. This 1865 document shows the signatures or X mark of all five children of Grigorio Briones (who died in 1863), and three of their spouses. The document was also signed by presiding judge Joseph Almy who built the first home in downtown Bolinas and was one of Marin County’s first judges.
