George Scott Miller and friends with surf board
March 1934
Surfing was popular in Bolinas since 1909. In this 1934 image, artist George Scott Miller on left, his friend Dudley Gunn and a young woman pose on Brighton Beach with a decorated surfboard. Miller was a descendent of pioneer settlers in Marin County. His parents bought the Rancho Las Baulines homestead as a weekend retreat and Miller lived there much of his adult life. His painting, now in the museum’s permanent collection, “The Owl Arriving at Bolinas” depicts Bolinas people on the dock waiting to greet passengers on the boat Owl.
