Bryant Austin is a Carmel-based photographer and author, widely exhibited and internationally acclaimed for producing life-size photographs of whales. His artworks seek to highlight the connectedness of humans and the natural world. In this photograph, two juvenile humpback whales approach Austin’s assistant, who met the experience with discipline and trust. One whale approaches from behind—so close that its fifteen-foot pectoral fin passes beneath the diver’s body—as both whales inspect his swim fins.
