Gertrude Southworth (1862 - 1946)
Bolinas Beach
c. 1900
When word spread that the boat owned by the local Runckle ranch family had capsized in the surf, townsfolk from the close-knit Bolinas community turned out to help.
It was quite a drama with several attempts to rescue the boat and people. With her poetic eye, Gertrude Southworth captured onlookers as they waited at low tide while the boat was brought to shore. The next photos in this series show men pulling the boat in by ropes, then hitching it too horses and running it up to dry sand. The Runckle’s ranch is now Volunteer Canyon, just south of today’s Audubon Canyon Ranch.
